International students to benefit from CPA extension program

International students are set to benefit from a new program being offered by the Division of Economic and Financial Studies at Macquarie University. The Master of Accounting (CPA Extension) is designed to provide students with full time support while undertaking the CPA component of the program.

This program, along with the Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting, and the original Master of Accounting, is a conversion course for students who do not hold an Australian accounting degree.

First of its kind

Macquarie University is one of the largest providers of postgraduate accounting education, and the CPA extension program is believed to be the first of its kind in the country. "We are not aware that any other universities are offering the CPA extension combined with the conversion course," says Program Director, Mary Dale.

For international students the CPA Extension program can only be completed on a full time basis and takes a minimum of 2.5 years. The program is available to domestic students but Dale does not anticipate that many locals will require the extra support that is provided.

Entry requirements

To enter the Master of Accounting (CPA Extension) candidates must have a degree from a recognised university, along with a grade point average of 2.7. Students whose first degree was not taught in English must also demonstrate proficiency in the language.

Components of the program

The Master of Accounting (CPA Extension) comprises thirteen Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting units, three compulsory CPA units and three CPA electives. The program includes extensive study in accounting as well as related areas such as law and finance.

The program not only includes study in the technical skills required but also has quite an extensive generic skill component. "We attempt to address all the skills that a professional accountant needs," says Dale. "So there are opportunities to develop communicative competence for example skills in presentation, business writing and teamwork."

Students enrolled in the Master of Accounting (CPA Extension) receive extensive support for the CPA component through weekly seminars at the University.

Assessment incorporates a component from Macquarie as well as an external CPA examination. When participants have graduated from the program they will have to undertake three years of work experience in order to become a fully-fledged CPA.

Teaching staff

Macquarie University teaching staff have for many years participated in the development, delivery and examinations associated with both the CPA and CA programs. This experience is of definite benefit to students who undertake the Master of Accounting (CPA Extension).

Career prospects

The program satisfies Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs requirements. After completing the program students are able to apply for permanent residency in Australia. To date though, many of the international students who have completed the Master of Accounting program have chosen to return to their homeland and contribute their new expertise to the development of their home economy.

Closing dates

Trimesters 1 and 2 of the program are fully subscribed at this stage. The closing date for Trimester 3 is 31 July 2005. International students are welcome to submit their applications at any time.
