Courses run by Macquarie University's Applied Finance Centre in the central business districts of major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Tokyo, Singapore (and soon Beijing) draw both teachers and students from the real world of finance.
Director of the Centre Professor Phil Dolan spent 13 years at the Macquarie Bank. Now he heads a program that not only uses the talents of full-time academic staff, but also, as an adjunct faculty, those who currently work in senior roles in companies.
Classes are held in the city from 5.30-8.30pm on weekdays. It's only on weekends that students travel to the Macquarie University campus at North Ryde. The face-to-face classes are complemented by Web-based discussion forums.
The Masters of Applied Finance is the focus of the Centre's teaching. Specialisations in corporate finance, risk management, funds management and treasury are all covered in different units.
"We aim at people already working in the finance industry or making the transition from areas such as engineering, law, IT or accounting," says Dolan.
The courses are popular with both men and women, from their mid-20s to their 40s. Many companies sponsor their employees to take them, or students pay upfront and are then reimbursed by their employers when they pass.
"The courses and the units within them are completely driven by market demand," says Dolan. "We talk to the market on a regular basis."
Such consultation has led to units in private equity, operational risk management and portfolio management. The Centre also runs shorter courses in which graduates take individual units over one to two days. They cover areas such as venture capital and behavioural finance.
Feedback from past students shows that the courses have helped people achieve their goals in furthering their careers. The Australian Financial Review recently quoted a former student who went on to a senior role in a major investment bank. He had taken his degree 13 years ago, and needed to update his knowledge. He wanted to make his qualifications contemporary, discover new subjects, and know what people in new areas were talking about. The course fully satisfied his expectations.
