A new network of Macquarie University academics with expertise in Asia will enable postgraduate students to collaborate with other students and staff from across the University and beyond.
Known as the Macquarie Asia Network, it will allow staff and students with an interest in Asia to share their common interests and research, countering the general demise of Asian studies within the Australian higher education sector.
“The wider initiative is to bring scholars of Asia together from across many disciplines, in order to establish a dialogue not only about subject content but about how the ‘knowledge of Asia’ is organised and represented in a global context,” says one of the Network co-ordinators, modern historian Dr Adrian Carton.
“This is an opportunity to foster interdisciplinary research projects, to foster cross-cultural dialogue, and to pool talents and resources as part of an exciting cultural resurgence where Asia is central to internationalisation.”
Dr Pal Nyiri of the Department of Anthropology says Macquarie University is uniquely positioned in terms of Asia studies.
“We have an interesting mix of country expertise at Macquarie - China, Korea and Japan, South and Southeast Asia, including little-researched countries like Laos and Burma – while at other universities there seems to be more of a concentration on one area,” he says.
Seminar series
The initial focus of the Network will be to co-ordinate a series of seminars, called the Global Changes - Asian Responses Seminar Series, which will analyse Asian responses to global change from a host of cultural, sociological, anthroplogical, legal, economic and historical perspectives.
China expert Professor Stephanie Donald from the University of Technology, Sydney, will deliver the first of these seminars, titled Out on a limb? Urban borders on the West Pacific Rim on August 30 at Macquarie University.
Professor Donald’s seminar will be held at 4pm on August 30 in Room E3A247 at Macquarie University, North Ryde. Bookings are not required and all are welcome.
