Virtual reality: Seminar and research opportunities
 |
Dr Manolya Kavakli |
Interactive systems, which include computer games and virtual reality, are an emerging area of research strength within Macquarie University’s Division of Information and Communication Sciences.
On Monday October 10, the Department of Computing’s Dr Manolya Kavakli will be conducting a free seminar on virtual reality, as part of the Technology Trends series of seminars presented each month by Macquarie University researchers, the CSIRO and industry leaders.
Kavakli teaches computer graphics and computer games design and implementation to Honours students. She is also part of a group of 36 that includes lecturers, PhD and Honours students who get together to look at interactive systems. The major focus for the Interactive Systems and Virtual Reality Research Group is to apply research findings to the design and implementation of interactive systems and test the usability of these systems through experimental analysis.
After receiving a major equipment grant, the Department of Computing established a Virtual Reality Lab and has since attracted a number of grants. Currently the group is working on developing a Virtual Reality Engine to be used in various departments within the University in a number of projects. They have also been developing a training simulation for police officers that will feature both gaming technology and virtual reality.
Research opportunities available
Up to three postgraduate research scholarships funded by the Australian Research Council are available in the Department of Computing. The general research topic is Virtual training environment for risk assessment. The research spans the fields of game technology, knowledge acquisition, language technology, training simulation and virtual reality. Further information on the scholarships and possible projects can be obtained from the Department’s Dr Debbie Richards at deborah.richards@mq.edu.au
