Movies at Macquarie's free screening of The Corporation
The winner of 25 international awards including the audience award for documentary in world cinema at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, is coming to Movies at Macquarie.
The Corporation
Through interviews with forty high fliers, The Corporation explores the nature and spectacular rise of this dominant institution. The corporation's grip on society is highlighted through footage from pop culture, advertising, news, and corporate propaganda.
Case studies, anecdotes and true confessions in The Corporation reveal behind-the-scenes tensions and influences in several corporate and anti-corporate dramas. These all shed insights on the character of the corporation.
Featuring interviews with CEOs and executives across industries (oil, pharmaceutical, computer, public relations, branding, advertising and marketing), a Nobel-prize winning economist, a corporate spy, academics, critics, historians and thinkers, the film presents diverse views on the most popular business vehicle today.
The Body Shop founder Anita Roddick says, "I constantly question myself: How can I bring values into an industry that is certainly not values-laden?" "It is never easy choosing the 10 Worst Corporations of the Year," says Robert Weissman Editor, Multinational Monitor. Pfizer Inc CEO, Hank McKinnell states, "We don't get anything for political contributions other than supporting people who support the right kinds of policies. Helping them get elected."
Movies at Macquarie
Movies at Macquarie gives the public an opportunity to watch a Hollywood blockbuster on the big screen, and then grill university experts about whether the film belongs in the realm of fact or fiction.
Join Vijaya Nagarajan and Dr Malcolm Quirey from the Department of Law to discuss the history of the modern corporation from its roots through its evolution as a vehicle for money making.
"Since its origins more than a century ago, there has been an explosion in corporate activity and corporate wealth," says Vijaya Nagarajan. "The Corporation focuses on whether the pursuit of a money making agenda to the exclusion of all else is appropriate in today's world. This is a very real issue given the recent scrutiny of companies such as James Hardie (in relation to asbestos related diseases in Australia), BHP (in relation to Ok Tedi mine in PNG) and Union Carbide (in relation to the Bhopal, India)."
The Corporation will screen in the Macquarie Theatre from 7pm on Sunday 4 June 2006.
Admission to Movies at Macquarie is free, however parking fees apply (tickets can be purchased from vending machines in the car park).
Drinks and snacks will be on sale in the foyer. Bookings are not required and everyone is welcome.
