Travel the world or climb the corporate ladder

If you are looking for a career where you can combine work with travel, accounting could fit the bill. With accountants in demand worldwide, a postgraduate accounting qualification could see you working in the United Kingdom and travelling across Europe in your spare time.

"An Australian accounting qualification is recognised right around the world and currently there is high demand for Australian accountants in the UK," says Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Finance Mary Dale. "It's a good career because there are so many different options. Many small businesses are looking for assistance with business strategies and that is an area where someone with an accounting qualification can really assist."

Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting
The Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting provides a path for university graduates of any discipline to acquire a professional accounting qualification. This qualification provides thorough preparation for the CPA and CA programs and is fully recognised by CPA Australia and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

The major subjects of the undergraduate accounting program form the basis of the postgraduate diploma. The 13 units of the program amount to more than half of an undergraduate degree and include major accounting units as well as subjects in law and statistics.

"The postgraduate diploma allows graduates to take undergraduate accounting subjects without having to do a whole undergraduate degree," explains Dale. "A number of people are not aware of this and think they need to start again."

Program curriculum
The curriculum of the postgraduate diploma is in-line with international accounting standards. Macquarie students gain a practical knowledge of the accounting working environment, Australian/international standards and areas of economics and law.

Subjects in the postgraduate diploma include:

"It is a rigorous program, and even though the material is undergraduate, it is taught at a graduate level," Dale says. "We extend the students knowledge beyond what they would learn in an undergraduate degree."

A management career
A Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting from Macquarie University not only provides graduates with internationally recognised skills and the opportunity for travel, but also a qualification which could assist in a management career.

"An increasing number of board members now hold accounting qualifications," says Dale. "Corporate governance requirements are becoming much more stringent and board members need to understand the financial information that they are given, so accounting is seen as a qualification of great worth."
