The overseas study advantage

A recent study found that six in 10 employers regarded the experience of overseas study as a unique competitive advantage to a graduate’s resume. If you are looking to gain the upper hand, Macquarie University is the place to come.

Through its International Office, Macquarie University now offers business students international dual degree opportunities. Students can complete a second degree by spending either a semester or a year in another country. Currently postgraduates have the opportunity to study in Denmark, France and Mexico, with five other countries in the pipeline.

“The main objective of the dual degree program is to offer multidisciplinary programs to students to prepare them for emerging opportunities in a global marketplace,” says Global Program Coordinator (Dual Degrees) Maritza Padilla.

Dual degree opportunities
The Aarhus School of Business in Denmark offers a one year program to students undertaking the Master of International Business or the Master of Commerce in Business. Students can choose from the Master of Science in Finance and International Business or the Master of Science in European Union Business and Law.

Institut des Hautes Etudes Economiques et Commerciales (INSEEC) offers Master of International Business students the opportunity to study for a semester in Paris, Lyon or Bordeaux. Students can undertake a Master of Science in International Business and Strategy, a Euro MBA or a Master in Wine and Management.

Students undertaking a Masters degree of any discipline are able to attend the Normandy Business School for a semester to gain a Postgraduate Diploma in European Management.

ESCEM School of Business and Management, with campuses in Tours and Poitiers, offer a program which is open to students undertaking a Master of International Business or a Master of Commerce in Business, Marketing, Accounting or Finance. The school has two intakes a year and students must complete this program in the middle of their Australian degree.

By attending the EGADE School of Business in Mexico, students will have the benefit of two Master of International Business degrees with different perspectives. Seven to eight months are spent in Mexico and students complete an intensive program which includes a field trip and a project in a company.

Travel grants and requirements for study
Travel grants are available to students travelling overseas for study and can be used to pay for airfare and accommodation. The amount of the grant is based on where the student is travelling to and the length of their stay.

Students who are applying for a dual degree must have a grade point average over 2.0 and good standing as they will be ambassadors for Macquarie University.

Keeping up with the international market
“Many students are coming back and telling us that an international exchange or internship program has been the factor that has helped them secure a job,” says Davina Potts, Associate Director of Macquarie International. “A lot of the graduates coming out of Europe have two or even three degrees which are recognised internationally. Our University is one of only four in Australia who offer dual degree opportunities and certainly has the biggest program. This program gives Macquarie University graduates the chance to keep up with the international market.”
