
New courses for 2008
Exciting new programs in Macquarie University's new medical school, as well as programs in transport security and computer forensics are amongst new degrees offered for the first time in 2008.
Offered by the Australian School of Advanced Medicine at Macquarie, the Master of Surgical Science and Master of Advanced Surgery will cater to qualified surgeons.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Transport Security offered by the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism (PICT) will appeal to those keen to learn more about security and risk in the maritime and aviation industries; and the Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Forensics will highlight the risks involved in information technology.
Master of Surgical Science
This program caters for aspiring surgeons in basic surgical training who wish to acquire a university qualification which signals their:
- mastery of the sciences basic to the practice of surgery
- achievement of an appropriate level of competence in ethical surgical practice and in teaching and research
- satisfactory completion of two units of study related to competence in a surgical specialty.
Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), be a registered medical practitioner or equivalent, or be within one year of completion of an MBBS degree. Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.
Master of Advanced Surgery
Surgeons who have a specialist qualification and who wish to acquire a university qualification will benefit from this new program. Completion of the program will signal mastery of additional skills and competencies in a sub-specialty.
The program comprises: surgical competencies; competence in ethical surgical practice; and competence in teaching and research.
Candidates must hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (or equivalent) and be appointed as a faculty member at the Macquarie University Private Hospital. Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.
Postgraduate Certificate in Transport Security
Students undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate in Transport Security will gain an overall historical and theoretical understanding of transport security, risk management and threat mitigation process as it applies to both the aviation and maritime sectors.
The program includes the core units:
- Aviation Security: Governance and Compliance
- Understanding Aviation Security: Past, Present and Future;
- Maritime Security: Governance and Compliance; and
- Understanding the Maritime Sector: Past, Present and Future.
There are a number of optional units that students can take to complete the course including: International Crime; Risk Management; Organisations of Global Security; and International Security Law. There is also the option of completing a 12-week internship at an appropriate government or non-government organisation concerned broadly with security issues.
Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Forensics
The Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Forensics is designed to equip students with an overall understanding of the theory underpinning this discipline and to develop a level of professional awareness of potential security risk associated with information technology.
Core units in the program comprise: Computer Forensics: Practice and Procedure; Legal Practice and Procedure; Assessment of Low Level File and Operating Systems; and Hardware.
Eight optional credit points can be taken in subjects including: Networking; Software Design and Tools; IT Security; a 12-week internship; and Business Management: an overview.
