New global communication course

Lecturer Usha Harris, Associate Professor Naren Chitty, Dr Sripan Rattikalcharlakorn and Dr Qin Guo in the new Video Production Studio.

If you're looking for a truly international media qualification the new Master of Arts in Global Communication Practice is for you.

Offered by the Department of International Communication, the MA in Global Communication Practice is designed for individuals who wish to develop strong video documentary production skills embedded in international communication theory. The course features hands on production work, as well as a study abroad component.

Video Production

The practical component of the MA in Global Communication Practice will feature four video documentary production units which have been exclusively reserved for students in this degree. These units are Media Production 1 & 2 and Writing for the Media 1 & 2.

Study Abroad

"The course is a bit different from what we currently have on offer in terms of practicality and structure, as students have the opportunity to learn in more than one cultural environment," says Senior Lecturer, Dr Qin Guo.

Students have the choice of undertaking Media and ICT in China (ICOM 826) or Media in the Thai Cultural Context (ICOM 827). These two programs involve seven weeks of study at Macquarie and then an intensive 10 day course in either China or Thailand. The study undertaken during the overseas component will equal six weeks of regular learning in Australia.

"The study abroad component has been included in the course because we believe students will need cultural competencies when they graduate as they will be working in an international environment," explains Guo.

Media and ICT in China

Seminars in ICOM 826 will be conducted at Macquarie University and the South China Normal University (SCNU) in Guangzhou. Students will have the opportunity to learn about media and ICT industries in both an international and Chinese context. The study abroad component includes workshops on Chinese media as well as visits to ICT industry locations, historical and cultural sites.

Media in the Thai Cultural Context

Masters students will be based in Bangkok as part of the study abroad component of ICOM 827. Site visits will be made to media organisations including Kantana Movietown, a leading Asian TV, film and animation production house. Workshops will be held at South-East Asia University, a private institution where students will have the opportunity to interact with Thai student mentors.

First intake

The first intake in Semester 2, 2006 will have a maximum of 23 students due to the use of specialised equipment. The most up-to-date technology available for video production is now available in the Department of International Communication's new media laboratory (see photo).

Following completion of the course students will have the skills and knowledge to work for international organisations such as the United Nations Development Program or trans-national companies.

The Master of Arts in Global Communication Practice will commence in July 2006.
