Australian Defence Force members now have the opportunity to complete postgraduate study at Macquarie University through the ADF Higher Education Advanced Standing Scheme (ADFHEAS).
Under ADFHEAS, Macquarie offers postgraduate advanced standing to defence personnel who hold a Defence Graduate Certificate or Diploma.
Relevant programs
Programs of special interest to Defence personnel have been identified in the Department of Politics and International Relations, the Macquarie Graduate School of Management, the Graduate Commerce and Accounting Centre and the Division of Information and Communication Sciences.
"This partnership also aligns closely with the new programs offered by our Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism Centre (PICT)," says Macquarie University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Loxton. "PICT links research with frontline policing, intelligence and security experience, and is developing a range of programs in policing and international security."
Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism Centre (PICT)
PICT is a focal point for teaching, research and collaboration in policing, intelligence and counter terrorism; locally, regionally and globally. The Centre offers rigorous academic programs based on current research, theory and practice.
Academic study leads to the progressive awards of Certificate, Diploma or Master of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism.
All academic programs are available on campus and via distance education. Specific units include:
- Theories of Political Violence and Terrorism
- Terrorism and Counter Terrorism
- Regional Security and Intelligence
- International Security and the State
- Media and Security
- Strategic Policing and Intelligence
- Forensic Science and Security
- Cyber Crime and Cyber Terrorism
International relations
The Master of International Relations (MIR) aims to provide students with an understanding of the political, social, economic, legal processes and institutions of the international system. It is an interdisciplinary coursework masters program which approaches international relations from both a practical and theoretical basis.
The MIR program incorporates four compulsory units that cover the international relations focus areas of theory, systems, law and political economy. Core units are supplemented with a variety of options including politics, economics, communications, law, business and anthropology, allowing students to tailor their studies to their specific interests and requirements.
Macquarie also offers innovative double masters degrees. The Master of International Relations can be combined with the: Master of International Business; Master of Translation and Interpreting; Master of Arts (in International Communication); Master of International Environmental Law; and Master of International Trade and Commerce Law.
Flexibility of study
"Most of the areas which offer programs of interest to the ADF teach by distance or flexible block mode," says Loxton. "This will be of benefit for those members with demanding work commitments."
