How to apply
Before submitting an application to undertake higher degree research prospective students are advised to think of a possible project area and speak with academics in the relevant department or unit. A list of divisional contacts can be found at: www.research.mq.edu.au/students/new_students/research_areas
"A draft proposal of the research topic should accompany the formal application," explains Lanna Leung from the Higher Degree Research Office. "The proposal should contain the planned title, some preliminary literature review, the objective of your research and proposed methodology."
The proposal should take into account:
- What research question you are aiming to answer and why it is important
- What background readings you have completed
- What resources you may require
- What appears to be a reasonable timeline for completion
"The whole process may take some weeks or some months, so it's important to allow plenty of time to complete your proposal," says Leung.
Fees and scholarships
The Research Training Scheme (RTS) is a Government scheme which allows domestic students to undertake higher degree research programs without paying fees. It is not necessary to apply for an RTS as it is automatically granted to eligible students.
Students are encouraged to apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or a University MQRES. Each of these awards provides a living allowance stipend, currently at $19,616 per annum.
While some scholarships are available, other international students and some professional doctoral degree students are charged a fee to study at Macquarie University. From this year on, these fees will be subject to indexation each year.
Most degrees have a scholarship attached and these can be found on the Higher Degree Research Office website (see link below).
Upcoming scholarships
Two PhD scholarships within the Department of Law are available for the second half of the year with an application deadline of 30 April 2007. Applications for APA scholarships open in June.

31 May 2007 is the closing date for all Doctor of Psychology programs for second half year. It is also the first closing date for receipt of applications for second half year 2007 with late June notification.
1 July 2007 the second half year commences.
