Helping research students to get started

New Macquarie University research candidates are able to 'hit the ground running' thanks to a comprehensive commencement program.
The mandatory Central Commencement Program (CCP) is conducted at the beginning of each semester and introduces candidates to the resources available at Macquarie as well as outlining what is required of them. While the program is available online, students are advised to attend the one day session as it provides them with the opportunity to meet key staff as well as other research candidates.
"The CCP has been a valuable addition to Macquarie's research program as students get to know the infrastructure of the University, learn who the key people are, and most importantly, feel welcome," says Associate Professor Ruth Neumann. "It is a way of communicating that Macquarie is a research university and one that cares about its research students."
First year research experience study
Neumann has been conducting a first year research experience study since 2003. Each year students are interviewed and surveyed to ensure quality improvement and effective candidature management, She says. "Interestingly, feedback changed dramatically with the establishment of the commencement program in 2004.
"In our first survey we received comments from students who were unaware of the key people, where they could find things on campus, or even where resources were," says Neumann. "Magically in 2004 this didn't happen and we have had quite different student feedback ever since."
The CCP is an evolving program and development since 2004 has been informed by student feedback. One major change introduced last year was the addition of breakout sessions during the day. These sessions allow interaction and networking between fellow research students.
The findings of the 2006 study found that the program is highly valued and recognised as important in making a good transition to higher degree research. Student comments included:
- The CCP is a terrific initiative. All presenters were terrific - sincere and honest, with care for the research candidates. Good information for getting started or continuing. Great tips - these are invaluable.
- Program really made me feel welcome and that the Uni was genuinely concerned for our welfare and progress.
Divisional Commencement Program
Following the Central Commencement Program students also complete a Divisional or Departmental Commencement Program (DCP). This program is designed to dovetail into the CCP. Each division/department runs their program independently with some areas running one day programs and others conducting fortnightly meetings to build peer support and provide an ongoing response to research needs. Some areas also offer the commencement program to second year students to build collegiality among students in different years of study.
Major benefits
Even though at this early stage it is hard to determine whether the CCP and DCP have impacted on the number of students completing their study, it is clear that the program has delivered a number of major benefits.
"Through systematic research and student feedback we have found that the program has made an enormous difference on how quickly and effectively students can start their research," says Neumann. "We are able to state this quite convincingly."
