Research scholarships available at Macquarie

StudentsIf you are looking to undertake higher degree research at Macquarie University there are a number of scholarships that can help you achieve your goal.

More than 30 scholarships are currently available in areas such as environmental and life sciences, computing, law, economics, education, linguistics, psychology, philosophy and modern history. Applications for the majority of these scholarships close at the end of June.

Five of the scholarships available are:

Aboriginal Literacy Project
A postgraduate position is available in the area of special education commencing in 2007. This project is a non-categorical approach to effective literacy instruction for Aboriginal low-progress readers.

Clinical Psychology PhD Scholarship
A Macquarie University Research Excellence (MQRES) PhD scholarship in Clinical Psychology is available from second semester 2007. Possible areas of research interest include (but are not restricted to): understanding the nature or causes of social anxiety; factors involved in the development of anxiety and/or depression at specific life stages; examination of innovative methods of treatment delivery.

Legal History PhD Scholarship
A Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) is available in the Centre for Comparative Law, History and Governance for a PhD project that will compare aspects of the legal history of property relations in Australia and Canada in the nineteenth century.

Cultural Economics PhD Scholarship
A Macquarie University Research Excellence PhD scholarship is available in the Department of Economics in the field of cultural economics. The successful candidate will work on research aimed at extending the techniques of cost-benefit analysis to account for market and non-market values and cultural value in investment appraisal in the cultural sector.

MQRES Geoarchaeology/Cultural Heritage Management PhD Scholarship
A postgraduate research scholarship is available in the Graduate School of the Environment as part of the Western NSW Archaeology Program. This interdisciplinary project will contribute to an integrated methodology based on archaeology, quaternary geochronology and geomorphology that emphasises the landscape setting as a means for evaluating the surface archaeological record in Australia.

Qualifications
Applicants for these scholarships should have completed an Australian four-year undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline with first class honours, or demonstrate equivalent research training from an Australian or overseas university, such as a Masters with substantial thesis component.

Funding
Each of the above scholarships are available to Australian and international applicants and pay a living allowance, currently $19,616 per annum, tax exempt (2007) with a 3.5 year full-time tenure, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will also be funded for the tenure of the scholarship. Additional benefits and financial top-ups are also available depending on the particular scholarship.
