Australian Government Research Scholarships
The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) offer Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) to domestic students of exceptional research promise. Competition for the APA scheme is intense and only applicants with outstanding academic achievement, including high first-class Australian honours or equivalent research qualifications, generally receive an offer of award.
Subject to satisfactory progress, the maximum full-time tenure of the award is two years for a Masters program and three years for a PhD. PhD candidates may receive up to a further six months of scholarship where there are research delays beyond the student's control.
The benefits of an APA are:
- A living allowance - the full-time stipend is currently $19,616 per annum tax exempt, and the part-time stipend $10,480 per annum taxable (2007). (Part time study is only available under exceptional circumstances.)
- Relocation and thesis allowances, with current allowance rates available at Information for Scholarship Applicants
- Leave provisions for recreation leave, sick leave and after 12 months tenure maternity/paternity leave.
Award holders are permitted to undertake a limited amount of paid employment provided that it does not interfere with their full-time study program. Tutoring or other academic employment is not an obligation of the award holder.
Applicants must be Australian/New Zealand citizens, or have been granted Australian permanent residency status no later than the application closing date.
Applying in the 2008 APA Round
The same application form is used to apply for admission to higher degree research candidature and scholarship.
The closing date for consideration of 2008 domestic candidature with an Australian Postgraduate Award is Wednesday 31 October 2007.
Other Scholarship Opportunities
PhD applicants applying in the APA round are also considered for the University funded Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES). MQRES scholarships are available for application year round for international and domestic Macquarie University PhD research candidates offering conditions similar to the APA.
2008 applicants not applying in conjunction with the APA round
Other applicants interested in a first half commencement should lodge their 2008 application form as early as possible to ensure early enrolment. All commencing candidates are expected to be enrolled in time for the Central Commencement Program held at the end of February.
