ELS headliners
Macquarie University's scientists are often quoted in the media, offering professional opinions on hot topics such as global warming and tsunami science. The following 'ELS Headliners' will be giving short presentations:
4pm: Dr Adam Stow - DNA forensics of endangered sharks
Stow is a Research Fellow and conservation geneticist in the Department of Biological Sciences. Stow is the project leader for genetic-based research investigating dispersal and genetic diversity in the endangered grey nurse shark.
4.30pm: Professor Andy Pitman - Earth System Science: a new research paradigm
Pitman heads up the Australian Earth Systems Science Network and is an expert on global Climate Change. His research interests include climate modelling and climate change with a particular focus on how the Earth's surface interacts with the atmosphere.
5pm: Associate Professor Trish Fanning - The Western NSW Archaeology Program: Geoscience in the pursuit of understanding Aboriginal life in Australia's desert environments
Fanning will take you on a journey back to the past in describing her research on the Australian Aboriginal archaeological record in its desert landscape setting in western NSW.
5.30pm: Associate Professor Damian Gore - Environmental research and rehabilitation in Antarctica
It seems that wherever people go, rubbish and contamination follow. It's the same with Antarctica, where rubbish tips and diesel spills spoil the landscape around scientific stations. These days, researchers from Macquarie University are working hard to fix these problems. Gore will report on the latest innovations in environmental research and remediation in this unique and beautiful environment.
6pm: Dr Dale Dominey Howes - Making Waves: Tsunami Science and the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System
Dominey-Howes is a senior lecturer in the Department of Physical Geography and is an international expert on tsunami. He has worked on the geological evidence and historical records of tsunami in the eastern Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He has recently been invited to co-ordinate a joint Australian-American tsunami field team to conduct a range of post-tsunami disaster assessments in the Republic of the Maldives.
6.30pm: Dr Joanne Jamie - Indigenous Bioresources - Elucidating natural products from traditional medicinal plants
Jamie is a senior lecturer in bio-organic and medicinal chemistry, and is a member of the Indigenous Bioresrouces Research Group (IBRG). Through collaboration with Aboriginal communities, the IBRG aims to document the traditional medicinal plant knowledge of Aboriginal communities and to identify the biologically active compounds from the traditional medicinal plants.
