Short courses to help staff cope with rapid technology change

Are your IT systems going places your IT staff haven't been before? Macquarie University offers tailored short courses and degree programs to prepare them for the next wave of technological change.

Macquarie University's Division of Information and Communication Sciences designs and delivers Macquarie's postgraduate courses in information and communication technologies.

These can give your staff the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of underlying principles by applying them to practical, industrially focused, problems. The curriculum is shaped by a simple philosophy, that the best way to prepare the IT managers and thought leaders of tomorrow is by challenging them to tame the emerging technologies of today.

Degrees, courses and workshops to suit your company

Macquarie's Postgraduate Professional Development Program (PPDP) can deliver tailored degree programs and workshops with topics and delivery times designed to suit your company's requirements. It will be more cost effective than hiring in consultants, and can be an attractive incentive to a very mobile breed of professionals. The outcomes? An IT team primed for the work ahead, and a recognised university qualification for your IT staff. Your staff will also receive advanced standing in a Macquarie IT Master's degree should they wish to complete a full program in one of our areas of expertise, such as Web Technology.

If it's a short course or workshop you have in mind, then customised training, designed around units taught in Macquarie's postgraduate degrees, can be delivered by industry-trained teaching staff in areas like Strategic Project Management, Project and Risk Management, Enterprise Architecture, Enterprise Management and Security Management.

A case study

When Manisha Shirodkar, training specialist for Global Technical Support office of multinational information storage and management company EMC, needed to upskill 12 of her technical staff in the area of Advanced C Programming training, she asked Macquarie's Dr Paul Watters to provide a customised short course.

Watters says: "When approached by EMC with a very specific requirement, we developed and delivered a course that only covered the material that the team specifically needed to know. We were also able to assess the students over the six weeks of the course, and provide feedback to their employer about their technical skills".

Held two nights per week over six weeks, and delivered by Simon Chong - a Macquarie alumnus - students learned about topics in system programming using the C programming language. This will assist them in writing device drivers, and maybe even contributing to the Linux kernel.
