New PhD scholarships in science and technology

PhD studentsA new PhD scholarship program has been set up to attract the best doctoral students to Macquarie University to work alongside world-class researchers.

Attracting the best and brightest PhD students is central to Macquarie University's new research investment plan. Because no university can be excellent at everything, Macquarie's goal is to be acknowledged as world class in identified areas across the University. Nine research areas of international significance and benefit to Australia have been chosen - six of these being in science and technology - and these areas will now be even further boosted to ensure our pre-eminence internationally.

New researchers and PhD scholarships
The first step in this investment plan is the appointment of an additional 40 top researchers across these nine areas of excellence. This will have flow-on benefits to research students because academics who are doing scholarly work at the cutting-edge of their disciplines make the best teachers and supervisors.

A new PhD scholarship program, the Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) scheme has been set up to attract the best doctoral students to Macquarie University to work alongside these world-class researchers.

The science and technology areas of research strength identified by Macquarie are Animal Behaviour; Climate Risk/Ecology and Evolution; Earth and Planetary Evolution; Functional Proteomics and Cellular Network; Lasers and Photonics; and Quantum Information Science and Security.

More about the scholarships
Under the MQRES scheme, scholarships are made available to fund postgraduate PhD students of exceptional research promise as they undertake their postgraduate research in the University's identified concentrations of research excellence.

Students generally receive the same conditions as the Federal Government's Australian Postgraduate Award Scheme. International applicants will receive tuition funding for the tenure of their award, and domestic applicants will have access to research training scheme (RTS) placement for their tuition funding.

Applicants must provide evidence of high Australian first class honours or equivalent research qualifications/background, and interested candidates should discuss the availability of funded positions with their proposed supervisor before applying.

Five of the research areas will each have five PhD scholarships available each year, while the other four areas will have three scholarships each per year.
